Top 10 First Aid Tips

Top 10 first aid tips

1. Do not pull out embedded objects.

Press firmly on either side, build padding around the object, and avoid pressure directly on it. Pulling it out could cause further injury and increase bleeding.

2. Burns: cool, call, cover

Cool the burn with cool running water for 20 minutes, remove nearby clothing or jewellery unless stuck, and seek help if needed.

3. Check danger first.

Make the scene safe before helping, then call 999 early when needed.

4. Do not put creams, lotions, sprays, ice or tight wrapping on burns.

Cover loosely with cling film or a clean non-fluffy dressing and keep the person warm.

5. Use an AED as soon as possible.

If someone is in cardiac arrest, call 999, start CPR, send someone else for a defibrillator if possible, and follow the AED voice prompts. Switch it on as soon as it arrives - it will tell you what to do.

6. Heavy bleeding: apply firm direct pressure

Use a clean pad or dressing if possible and bandage firmly. Call 999 if you can not control the bleed.

7. Electric shock: turn off the power before touching

Switch off the mains; do not touch the person until the electricity is off, then assess breathing and call 999.

8. Call 999 in all cases of suspected Anaphylaxis

Use their adrenaline auto injector and do not stand them up. Follow the advice of the 999 operator.

9. Poisoning

Find out what was swallowed, do not give food or drink unless advised, do not induce vomiting, and stay with the person and call 999.

10. What 3 words

If you are not sure where you are when calling the emergency services use what 3 words. This is a free app which can tell you your location so the ambulance can find you!
